Iranian athlete Sajjad Mardani has snatched the countryâ„¢s second silver medal at the 2013 World Taekwondo Championships in Puebla, Mexico.
Mardani on Saturday lost to his strong rival from Gabon Anthony Obame 10-2 in the Menâ„¢s +87kg category final to grab the silver medal. Obame is a London Olympics silver medalist.
Ivan Trajkovic from Slovenia and Robelis Despaigne from Cuba received bronze medals in the weight division.
The Iranian taekwondo fighter advanced to the final round by defeating his opponents from Uzbekistan, Canada, Italy and Cuba.
Mardaniâ„¢s victory brought the third medal for the Iranian team.
On Thursday Behnam Asbaqi won the gold medal by beating his Korean rival Kim Hun 5-4 in the Menâ„¢s Under-68 kg final.
Hadi Mosta’an had won Iran’s first silver medal in the Menâ„¢s Under-58 kg category after suffering a close defeat of 9-8 against his South Korean rival Tae-Moon Cha in the final match.
The 2013 World Taekwondo Championships started on July 15 at Pueblaâ„¢s exhibition center, bringing together more than 870 athletes from 134 countries and regions. The competitions will run until July 21.
South Korea hosted the previous World Taekwondo Championships in 2011.
