Deputy Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Gholamreza Khadem Biqam says the Islamic Republic has proposed the establishment of an international organization to fight pirates.
Speaking on the sidelines of the first forum of modern marine technologies in the northern city of Nowshahr on Wednesday, the Iranian naval commander said Foreign Ministry must present the UN with a plan so that in can decide about each country’s share in the anti-piracy campaign.
Khadem Biqam added that Indian Ocean littoral states have unanimously called for the formation of an anti-piracy organization, which is much needed as at present there is no mechanism in place to fight pirates.
The rear admiral said the presence of Iranian fleets in international waters is because of two tactical and politico-educational objectives.
Å“We are trying to exhibit our might to the world … and on the other hand … familiarize our young cadets … with the principles of seamanship,” Khadem Biqam stated.
The deputy commander of the Iranian Navy also expressed hope that Iran would soon dispatch naval fleets to the Mediterranean Sea, South Indian Ocean, South Pole as well as the Far East.
In recent years, the Iranian Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.
