The fact that the United States is trying to keep the Iranian negotiators from being involved in the Geneva talks is no surprise primarily because much of the conflict in Syria is in fact a proxy conflict against Iran, an American geopolitical analyst says Eric Draitser.
He made the remarks as UN Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said that Washington is against the participation of Tehran in the Geneva II Conference. Å“Our partners in the United States are still not convinced that Iran’s participation would be the right thing to do,” he said.
Å“Washington would be ill-advised to allow Iranians to be involved in the process because it seems like it would be a self-defeating situation where the Iranians will be part of a negotiated solution thereby denying the United States and their Israeli proxies the regional hegemony that they seek,” said Draitser, founder of StopImperialism.com, in an interview with Press TV on Sunday.
He added that the Western-backed conflict against the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is Å“a move towards the consolidation of power in the region by the US and the Western powers.”
Å“Iran is seen as a bulwark against that hegemony.”
Draitser said the US has been legitimizing Å“a so-called opposition which is in fact a terrorist proxy force”.
He described the idea of negotiation between the Syrian government and these Å“terrorist” groups as a Å“farce”.
Å“Anybody who believes the Geneva talks are going to achieve anything substantive towards peace I think is painfully deluded,” he concluded.
Syria has been gripped by a deadly conflict for nearly three years. Damascus has been blaming the US and its western and regional allies for fueling the flames of the unrest in the country.
