Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi (R) meets with Syria’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud, in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on February 18, 2013.
Iran First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi has reiterated Iran’s support for democratic reforms in Syria, condemning foreign interventions in the Arab country.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports reforms which would meet the demands of the Syrian nation, and considers foreign interference in the country’s affairs and support for terrorist actions against the interests of the Syrian nation and other nations,” Rahimi said at a Monday meeting with Syria’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud.
Rahimi underscored the determination of Iran and Syria to enhance mutual ties in all spheres and stressed the need for further exchange of views between the two countries’ officials to that effect.
The Iranian vice president said enemies seek to achieve their objectives by ramping up economic pressure on Iran and triggering war and bloodshed in Syria, noting that the enemies’ efforts are doomed to failure.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will stand by the Syrian nation and steadfastly support them against enemies and terrorists,” Rahimi added.
Mahmoud, for his part, praised Iran’s support for Syria and noted that despite the hegemonic powers’ propaganda campaign against the Islamic Republic, Tehran’s popularity is growing among the regional nations, particularly in Syria.
The situation in Syria is improving, Mahmoud said, adding that all Syrians call for the exit of foreign militants from the country and the Syrian government is pursuing a plan to hold dialogue with all Syrian political factions.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
