Indonesia energy watchdog chief detained

Indonesiaâ„¢s anti-corrupt agency has detained the countryâ„¢s energy watchdog chief for alleged corruption, officials have announced.

Rudi Rubiandini, the head of SKKMIGAS (Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities Republic of Indonesia) was taken into custody late Tuesday, over allegations of bribery, corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Spokesman John Budi said Wednesday.

Two other men were also arrested for questioning, Budi added, giving no further details.

Rubiandini, a former deputy energy and mineral resources minister, Å“is suspected of committing an act of bribery, so we are questioning him. He has not officially been named a suspect yet,” the KPK spokesman stated.

Budi went on to explain that the KPK commission has also seized hundreds of thousands of dollars in US bills and documents.

This is while concerns over Indonesiaâ„¢s energy sector are increasing as the government has adopted fresh Å“nationalistic policies,” under which some foreign companies such as US oil giant Chevron have been dragged into legal problems.

According to KPK, three staff members of a local Chevron subsidiary were also kept in custody, charged of alleged corruption.

The issue has worried foreign investors who have faced a U-turn in industry regulations and legal uncertainty in the Southeast Asian country in recent years.
