The Indian army says its forces have killed a Pakistani soldier in the Indian-administered area of the disputed Kashmir region.

“We detected some suspicious movement yesterday near the LoC (Line of Control) inside our territory and the challengers from our side fired and in the ensuing firefight he was killed,” spokesman for the Indian army, Lieutenant Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said on Friday.

The spokesman added that an AK-47 rifle was found alongside the body of the soldier.

However, a Pakistani security official said that the soldier had been killed after he “inadvertently crossed the Line of Control in Khoi Ratta sector.”

The recent death is expected to intensify tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi.

Last month, the Pakistani military said Indian troops had crossed the border, killing one of its soldiers. The incident came after two Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistani forces.

Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.

Over the past two decades, the conflict in Kashmir has left over 47,000 people dead by the official count, although other sources say the death toll could be as high as 90,000.
