Hawkish US lawmakers who oppose a newly-reached nuclear deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany are trying to put �œimpossible demands” on Iran, which could ruin the deal, a journalist says.
Republican lawmakers in the United States are working to formally challenge President Barack Obama over the interim nuclear agreement with Iran.
�œI think that reflects a lot of the thinking among conservative and over-conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives and the Senate and even of some Democrats,” freelance journalist and author Reese Erlich said in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
Obama administration officials have been urging lawmakers not to move ahead with a new anti-Iran sanctions package, saying doing so would discredit the nuclear talks.
Erlich said some US lawmakers are �œputting impossible demands on Iran and on the Obama administration in an attempt to scuttle the talks.”
He also referred to a joint op-ed piece by former Secretaries of State Kissinger and Schultz, describing it as �œvery negative toward a possible negotiated agreement with Iran.”
As part of the interim deal announced in Geneva on November 24, Iran agreed to limit some aspects of its nuclear energy program and the US and its allies made a commitment to refrain from imposing new sanctions for six months.
The White House says a six-month window without new sanctions would allow negotiators to work on a comprehensive solution to the West�™s decade-old dispute with Iran. But many members of Congress remain unconvinced.
The danger, however, is that �œthe end to the six month agreement” would come with more �œUS sanctions and more hostilities between the two countries,” said Erlich.
The White House warned on Tuesday that imposing new sanctions on Iran will send the signal that Washington negotiates in �œbad faith.”
