Cuauhtemoc Estrada, 50, was shot while trying to intervene in the robbery outside the hall, sheriffâ„¢s officials said.
Estrada was a former Marine who had been with the department for more than 20 years.
Bellwood police and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office are investigating.
According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 32 people are murdered with guns in the US every day and 140 Americans are treated for gun-related injuries in an emergency room.
Since the deadly shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 which left 20 first-grade school children and six staff members dead, more than 34,000 people have died from guns in the country, according to slate.com.
