Helpline calls up after Savile scandal

The number of sexual abuse helpline calls in Britain has doubled after the Savile scandal.

The number of calls made to a children’s charity helpline in Britain reporting sex abuse has almost doubled since last year following the scandal surrounding former TV host Jimmy Savile.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) said it received 594 calls to its 24-hour advice line during June and July this year about sexual abuse, compared to 323 over the same period in 2012.

The organization interpreted the sharp rise in sexual abuse calls as a sign of change in the way Britons react to abuse in wake of the Savile scandal.

“The Savile scandal has shocked the nation but has also increased public awareness of how difficult it is for children to speak out and how crucial it is for adults to report any suspicions or concerns they have straight away,” said John Cameron, head of the helpline.

Earlier in January, in a 37-page report by the police and the NSPCC, Savile was branded as one of the UKâ„¢s most prolific known sexual predators who used his celebrity status to Å“hide in plain sight.”

According to the report titled Å“Giving Victims a Voice,” some 214 crimes, including 34 of rape or penetration during 54 years of abuse committed by the presenter, were recorded across 28 police force areas.
