Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel was born in 1945 in Tehran. After finishing high school in 1963, he started studying physics at University of Tehran. He got his MSc in physics from Shiraz University and taught physics at university before continuing to study philosophy at Tehran University. He has been teaching western philosophy at Tehran University since 1985.
He was elected to parliament from Tehran for four consecutive terms. He served as the speaker of Majlis for four years from 2004 to 2008. He has since then been senior aide to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he was arrested and jailed for 66 days for his struggles against the Shah regime.
