Gunmen kill 2 policemen in Peshawar

Pakistani policemen carry away collected evidence after a gun battle with Taliban militants in Peshawar on December 16, 2012.

Heavily armed gunmen have ambushed a police checkpoint in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar, killing at least two policemen and injuring several others.

Local officials say the security personnel were killed after three gunmen riding two motorbikes attacked the police checkpoint on the outskirts of Peshawar on Monday.

Security sources said the attackers managed to flee the scene before the policemen cordoned off the area.

“We don’t know about the identity of the attackers but the militants fled towards the tribal region after killing two policemen at the checkpoint in Pashta Khara area,” said a senior police official.

No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the attack although similar incidents are usually blamed on Taliban militants.

Peshawar has experienced a fresh spate of violence and militancy over the past few months. Militant attacks and bomb explosions have killed hundreds of people in Peshawar so far this year.

Thousands of Pakistani people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when the country entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
