At least 15 people have been killed and more than a dozen were injured in a grenade attack on a camp of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Kenyaâ„¢s troubled northeast.

Local security officials say the deadly attack took place in the remote Joroqo village in Mandera County which lies near the borders with Somalia and Ethiopia.

“The attackers fled towards Ethiopia but they are being pursued,” said Mandera County commissioner Michael Tailel.

The epicenter of the ongoing fighting between clans is located about 800 kilometers from the capital Nairobi.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

However, the attack comes only two days after violent clashes on Friday between rival clans in the same volatile region left nine people dead and seven others injured.

Members of the Degodia and Garreh clans in Mandera County have been fighting for several months. The violence has also spread to neighboring Wajir County and has claimed many lives so far.

The Kenyan government announced in May that it had sent police reinforcements and was planning to deploy soldiers to help restore stability in the violent region.

There are many bloody tribal clashes over access to water and pasture and cattle rustling, and subsequent revenge attacks, in northeastern Kenya.
