Greek protesters march towards the Turkish embassy in Athens on June 3, 2013.
A few thousands of Greeks have held a rally in the capital in support of the ongoing Turkish protesters against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and his government.
Greek authorities said the march on Monday was held near the Turkish Embassy in Athens, adding that about 1,500 people attended the event. This comes while others estimate that more than 2,000 participated.
“From Taksim Square to Athens, we fight poverty and hunger,” chanted the protesters.
A similar rally in support of the Turkish protesters was held in the northern city of Thessaloniki on Sunday.
Greeceâ„¢s second largest political party Syriza has criticized the use of excessive force by the Turkish police against the protesters and called on the European Union to put pressure on Ankara.
“All over Turkey there are protests over press freedom, union rights, the rights of Kurds, women and the right to protest. It is imperative that Erdogan listens,” said Syriza.
At least three protesters have been killed and more than 410 injured since the clashes in Turkey erupted on Friday.
Initially, the protests were held as a local environment campaign but later turned into a protest against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoganâ„¢s government, calling for his resignation.
