Greek federation of secondary education has called for strike action during the final school examinations.

The federation of public secondary school teachers (OLME) announced on Friday that it has planned an initial 24-hour strike for May 17, followed by five-day rolling strikes starting from May 20.

Teachers are protesting against planned job cuts and two-hour increase on their weekly working hours from September, which are a part of latest actions by the government in order to secure further bailout aid from the troika of international lenders.

If local teachersâ„¢ union assemblies nationwide approve the planned walkouts on May 15, then strike action could cause disturbances of university entrance exams to be held May 17-31.

The Greek government has said that it will take any required action to ensure that the exams will go ahead smoothly, including the civil mobilization order, which would force staff to go back to work.

Greece has been at the epicenter of the eurozone debt crisis and is experiencing its sixth year of recession, while harsh austerity measures have left tens of thousands of people without jobs.

Greek youths have also been badly affected, and more than half of them are unemployed.

The worsening debt crisis has forced the governments of European Union states to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, which have triggered massive demonstrations in many European countries.
