‘Gaddafi's son faces trial in August’

A top Libyan official says the trial for the second son of slain Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi will be held in August.

The announcement was made on Monday by Al-Seddik al-Sur of the state prosecutor’s office.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi will stand trial along with other Gaddafi-era officials including former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senuss, ex-premier al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, and ex-spokesman Milad Daman.

Saif al-Islam is facing a string of charges, including threatening national security and escaping from prison.

Saif al-Islam is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity over the killing of civilian protesters during mass demonstrations against his father, who was toppled in 2011 after ruling the country for over forty years.

Earlier this month, a pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC) ruled that Libya must extradite Saif al-Islam to The Hague.

Since November 2011, the 40-year-old has been in the custody of a local militia in the western mountain city of Zintan, where the writ of the central government runs weakly.

Libyans rose up against Muammar Gaddafiâ„¢s four-decade rule in February 2011 and deposed him in August 2011. He was slain on October 20 of the same year.
