G4S chief executive to step down

G4S chief executive is to resign over 2012 Olympics shambles.

Chief executive of private security group G4S is to step down over the companyâ„¢s failure to meet its commitment in terms of security guards for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The company said Nick Buckles will be replaced by Ashley Almanza, a senior executive from the oil and gas company BG Group, at the end of May.

Buchkleâ„¢s resignation was welcomed by G4Sâ„¢s biggest shareholders after a series of embarrassments centered around the company.

“I think we feel that the time is right for Nick (Buckles) to move on,” a leading shareholder said.

Buckles, who has led the company for eight years, has been under fire recently after the group announced they cannot fulfill their promise to provide 10,400 security guards for the Olympics just two weeks before the Games.

The fiasco forced Olympic organizers to request the British army and the police to fill in the security gap.

G4S, however, has been hired to help secure the Group of Eight industrialized nations (G8) summit in Northern Ireland next month.

The company also faces criticism for its cooperation with the Israeli regime, including providing equipment and services to Israeli checkpoints, illegal settlements, the apartheid wall and jails where Palestinian political prisoners are subjected to mistreatment and torture.
