Fresh violence kills five in Karachi

Pakistani forces guard a street in the southern port city of Karachi.

Separate incidents of violence have left at least five people dead and several others injured in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, security sources say.

In the first incident, a policeman was killed after unknown assailants sprayed bullets on a police patrol in the Chawla Market in Nazimabad on Sunday morning.

Security forces cordoned off the area after the attack, and launched an investigation.

Separately, four people including a woman died in separate shooting incidents in different districts across Karachi. The attacks happened in Baldia, Garden and Orangi regions of the volatile city.

Meanwhile, security forces say they have arrested five criminals and recovered a large amount of arms and ammunitions from their hideouts.

Security forces said they have launched an investigation into the violent incidents.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

The developments also come as Pakistan’s top court has ordered the government law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against pro-Taliban militants in the country’s largest city.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government in Sindh Province, of which Karachi is the capital, to take the issue of the presence of the Taliban in the city seriously.

Reports say thousands of Pro-Taliban militants have made their way into the country’s largest city and its commercial hub.

The city is home to numerous ethnic groups and has been hit by clashes between rival ethnic and political factions in the past two decades.

Thousands of people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.
