Police chief jobs are open to overseas cops under new plans.
British police has unveiled plans to allow foreign police chiefs to run British forces as constables for the first time.
The policing minister, Damian Green, said foreign police officers could soon be recruited as constables from countries with a similar legal and policing system to the UK, such as the US and Canada.
Green described the new regulations as ending the œclosed shop” for police recruitment, and said, “This will open up policing to bright and talented people from all walks of life who are seeking a new challenge.”
According to British police rule of recruitment, candidates for the police top job must be British citizens for national security reasons.
Under this rule, New York police chief, Bill Bratton, known for his tough anti-crime tactics, was prevented from applying to take charge of the Metropolitan Police in 2011.
Hence, despite Bratton being Prime Minister David Cameron™s preferred candidate, the job went to British police chief, Bernard Hogan-Howe.
Critics, however, do not accept the premise that there is a shortage of talent in the police service, saying that UK policing experience is crucial to running a force.
