Florida man kills two, slits own throat

Police investigate after a man killed his wife and son with a crossbow.

A man in the US state of Florida killed his wife and son on Monday with a crossbow and then committed suicide in a hotel hundreds of miles away, authorities said.

The 53-year-old Pedro Jose Maldonado Sr. killed his wife, 47-year-old Monica Narvaez-Maldonado, and his teenage son, 17-year-old Pedro Maldonado Jr., inside their Weston townhouse, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say Maldonado then drove to Tallahassee and attempted to use the crossbow to kill another son who is a student at Florida State University, but that son escaped.

After authorities found the bodies, they learned that Maldonado was at a motel near Lake City, 460 miles from his home, where they found him in a bathroom, dead from apparently slitting his own throat.

The rate of violent crime in the United States went up 15 percent last year, according to a recent government report. A majority of Americans say crime is an extremely or very serious problem in the country.

The US crime rate rose for the second year in a row, marking an end to two decades of declining crime rates.
