Up to 70,000 people wearing theatrical costumes and colorful masks in Venice’s landmark St Mark’s Square watched the eye-catching “flight of the angel” which is part of the centuries-old Carnival.
This year a 20-year-old Venetian student wearing a glamorous red gown and a black hat had a chance to perform the stunt. Marta Finotto glided on a harness from the 99-metre bell tower of Saint Mark’s Basilica to a stage below.

The Venice Carnival is a chance to see and to be seen. The annual event draws thousands of tourists keen to take part in theatrical performances and festive balls. The event runs through February 12.
