Female MP abducted in Afghanistan

Unidentified gunmen have abducted a female member of the Afghan parliament in the country’s troubled province of Ghazni, security sources say.

Local Afghan officials say Friba Ahmadi Kakar was abducted late on Saturday evening along with her four children in Ghazni Province while traveling from the southern city of Kandahar to Kabul.

Kakar was the representative of Kandahar in the lower house of parliament.

Government officials in Kandahar have also confirmed the abduction.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the kidnappings.

The incident comes as the security situation continues to deteriorate in the war-ravaged country.

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. While the war removed the Taliban from power, insecurity continues to be high across the country.
