US Marine Corps veteran Dr. Alan Sabrosky has said that the increasing power of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is œhorrible.”
He made the remarks when asked about a critical report by the American Civil Liberties Union that urged the Obama administration and Congress to rein in the increasing power of the FBI.
According to the ACLU report, the powers of the FBI have expanded too dramatically over the past 12 years, transforming the agency into a œsecret domestic intelligence agency.”
œThe civil liberties and civil rights of Americans have been grossly compromised as a result of this process,” he said in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday.
œWith my history and my background, it was to me extremely tragic that over the past decade or so, the great enemy of the American people and the better things this country has stood for in its history has become the elected and unelected governments in Washington and is what I believe,” Sabrosky added.
The report also said œthese domestic intelligence gathering operations has crippled constitutional oversight mechanisms.”
œCourts have been reticent to challenge government secrecy demands and, despite years of debate in Congress.‰.‰. it took unauthorized leaks by a whistleblower to finally reveal the government™s secret interpretation of these laws and the Orwellian scope of its domestic surveillance programs,” the report says.
The ACLU report compiles examples of the changes of law and policy since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, which the group says œunleashed the FBI from its traditional restraints and opened the door to abuse.”
