EDL key online Islamophobic abuser in UK

A new anti-fascist study has blamed the far-right English Defence League (EDL) for a third of online hate attacks that have targeted the UKâ„¢s Muslim community.

The report by the Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies at Teesside University quoted that “online expressions of anti-Muslim sentiment have reached significant proportions”.

The study titled, Anti-Muslim Hate Crime and the Far Right is based on the figures of the yearly report issued by Tell Mama, the hotline which records Islamophobic incidents in the UK.

The report said that 74 percent of online racist incidents were reported to Tell Mama, compared to 26 percent occurring in the Å“physical world”.

Out of the 434 incidents of online abuse, 300 were linked to a far-right movement, while 147 of those were linked to the EDL, which is a third of all online anti-Muslim incidents.

The information was based on 2012-2013 figures gathered prior to the killing of British Soldier Lee Rigby in south-east London.

According to Tell Mama, 212 Å“anti-Muslim incidents” have been reported after Rigbyâ„¢s killing.

The incidents included 11 attacks on mosques across the UK in a series of far-right expressions with swastikas and the letters EDL, KKK (Ku Klux Klan) and NF (National Front) being sprayed on walls of mosques.
