A new survey has found that a majority of the British people believe the ruling Conservatives are more divided now than under former Prime Minister John Major in the 1990s.
The poll, carried out by ComRes for The Independent, also found that almost two thirds of the voters agree that current Prime Minister David Cameron lacks the required leadership qualities to secure a Commons majority at the next general election.
The findings underline the challenge facing the prime minister after months of unrest within his party.
Asked whether Cameron is presiding over a more divided party than his Tory predecessor, 56 percent agreed while 23 percent disagreed.
Just 29 percent of those questioned thought the premier had the leadership qualities to win outright in 2015, compared to 61 percent who said he did not.
According to the poll, the opposition Labour Party has lost four points since last month on 34 percent, with the Conservatives down two on 30 percent. But the UK Independence Party (Ukip) has surged four points to 17 percent, a record high for a ComRes poll.
“A large chunk of the Conservative Party is having a nervous breakdown over Europe and getting out of Downing Street’s control”, said one of Major’s press secretaries, Sir Christopher Meyer.
