Congress wants Iran sanctions for AIPAC

Investigative journalist Dave Lindorff says American lawmakers want further Iran sanctions in order to appease the Zionist lobby.

In an interview with Press TV on Monday, he said there is a desire in Congress to pass new sanctions against Iran so lawmakers can œlook tough in support of Israel.”

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) lobbying group œhas a lot of clout” in Congress, he added.

œThe pro-Israel legislators are trying to throw little wrenches into” the Iran deal, the author said. œIt™s mostly about setting themselves up to get AIPAC support for the next cycle of elections in November.”

On Thursday, the US Treasury and State Departments issued new sanctions against a number of companies and individuals for œproviding support for” Iran™s nuclear energy program.

The move comes as Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany reached an interim deal in Geneva on November 24 over Tehran™s nuclear energy program.

The six-month accord lays the groundwork for a comprehensive resolution to the West™s decade-old dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

The Geneva deal has been widely criticized by members of Congress as it allows Iran to continue enriching uranium.
