The US Congress is gearing up to œundermine” the recent agreement between Iran and the six world powers, including the US, over Tehran™s nuclear energy program, an investigative journalist says.
œThe Congress is trying to undermine the interim agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries… over the nuclear fuel issue in Iran,” Dave Lindorff said in a phone interview with Press TV on Wednesday.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R – VA), the highest-ranking Jewish member of Congress, is pushing for a bill to challenge the Obama administration over the interim deal clenched in Geneva last month between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany known as the P5+1.
House Republicans are considering several possible responses to the agreement. One option would be pressuring the Senate to consider new sanctions on Iran. And the other would be including language in the bill to formally express disapproval of the deal.
Key US senators have already said they are prepared to press forward with a new package of anti-Iran sanctions that can be imposed quickly if the Geneva accord fails to lead to a long-term comprehensive agreement.
The ongoing effort in Congress to kill the Geneva accord œis one of a stream of cases where the Senate has tried to prevent, or successfully prevented, the president from negotiating treaties,” Lindorff said.
œIt™s a very common thing in the US for Congress to refuse to approve a treaty that is negotiated by the president.”
The White House has warned that imposing new sanctions on Iran will send the signal that Washington is negotiating in œbad faith.”
