China urges dialogue among Egyptians

China has called on all political sides involved in the ongoing dispute in Egypt to settle their differences through dialogue, saying Beijing respects the will of the Egyptian nation.

Å“We hope parties concerned in Egypt avoid resorting to violence and resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation as soon as possible, in order to realize reconciliation and social stability,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Thursday.

Egypt plunged into a fresh wave of unrest after General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, head of the Egyptian army, declared that President Moahmed Morsi was no longer in office and announced the suspension of the countryâ„¢s Constitution after days of massive anti-government protests across Egypt on June 3.

A day later, the chief justice of Egyptâ„¢s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour, was sworn in as interim president of the country. The Egyptian military said Morsi was being held Å“preventively.”

Pointing to the current situation in Egypt, the Chinese diplomat added that Beijing attaches great importance to recent events in the North African country, stressing that China respects the choice of the Egyptian people.

She further emphasized that friendly relations between Cairo and Beijing would continue regardless of the ongoing developments in the Arab state.

According to Hua, the Chinese Embassy in Egypt has been closely monitoring the situation since the outbreak of turmoil.

Morsiâ„¢s Muslim Brotherhood has announced that it would boycott the new political process in the country and also called on its supporters to detach themselves from the recent development.

The group has also called on Egyptians to hold nationwide rallies after Friday prayers to condemn the coup that ousted the countryâ„¢s first-elected president.
