Protesters in the Chilean capital of Santiago have set ablaze buses by hurling Molotov cocktails during late night clashes with police.
Chilean authorities reported on Tuesday that at least three buses were set on fire in the overnight unrest in the capital but passengers aboard the buses managed to escape the scene unharmed.
No other injuries were reported following the event, during which gunfire was also heard.
The protesters were reportedly commemorating the second anniversary of the death of a minor who was shot to death by police officers at a protest march.
According to the police chief of Santiagoâ„¢s western metropolitan district, officers used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds of protesters, who pelted the area with stones.
The official further added that police made no arrests in the violent protest effort.
He added that one of the buses set ablaze was completely destroyed while the others were only partially damaged.
Protest rallies across Chile, mostly by students, have been rampant since 2011, demanding improvements in public education.
On May 8, tens of thousands of students staged nationwide demonstrations in Chileâ„¢s major cities, including Santiago, Valparaiso and Concepcion, in order to call for an end to for-profit education in the country.
