Two car bomb attacks have been carried out in a uranium processing plant owned by French nuclear giant Areva and a military base in northern Niger, injuring over a dozen people.

An explosive-laden car was detonated at the plant in the industrial town of Arlit on Thursday. Areva said in a statement that 13 of its staff members were wounded in the car bombing.

Meanwhile, Nigerien Defense Minister Mahamadou Karidjo said, Å“There was an explosion in front of the military base at Agadez.” The minister added that it was a car bomb attack.

The car bombings on Thursday were the first such attacks in Niger since the country helped France in its war on Mali. France launched the war on January 11, under the pretext of halting the advance of rebel fighters in the country.
