Bulgaria™s opposition party has boycotted parliament for a third consecutive day, blocking the work of the assembly amid calls for the resignation of government.
The opposition party, Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), continued its blockade on Friday aimed at showing the ruling Socialists™ inability to govern.
Leader of the GERB and former premier Boiko Borisov also demanded that Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski’s government resign.
“We need immediate elections. The government lacks a majority – on what basis do they want to rule?” said Borisov.
Friday™s protest caused the cancellation of a debate and vote on a motion for the resignation of the parliament speaker and a non-confidence vote to the government, a motion proposed by the GERB.
The ruling Socialist party dismissed the boycott as irresponsible and said a government resignation and new elections in times of economic hardship was not an alternative.
Analysts say the standoff highlights the deepening political crisis in the country and it is likely to fuel public™s discontent with the political elite.
Recent opinion polls show that half of Bulgarians want the government to step down by next May.
Bulgarians have staged numerous protests since the government took office four months ago.
The current Bulgarian government came to power in May, two months after the previous government fell following massive protests over low living standards and high utility bills in the poorest EU member state.
