Brussels airport hit by strike

Passangers walk by piles of bags left due to striking baggage handlers at Brussels Airport, Belgium on May 14, 2013.

Tens of thousands of bags have been piled up at Brussels Airport and dozens of flights cancelled as baggage handlers stage a third consecutive day of strike to protest staff shortage.

At least 49 flights were scrapped Tuesday and several others delayed due to the strike staged by the workers of Swissport Handling at Belgiumâ„¢s main airport.

In addition, some 20,000 bags have been piled up at the airport since the strike’s start on May 12, causing arriving passengers to leave the airport without their luggage.

No agreement has yet been reached, despite several hours of negotiations between Swissport officials and union representatives.

Baggage handlers at Swissport say there are too few workers and that they are in urgent need of reinforcements, as their staff is overworked.

According to the unions, sometimes there are only two handlers loading an aircraft instead of four who used to work together previously.

Swissport is one of the two companies, which take care of passenger luggage at the airport and is contracted by nearly 30 airlines, including German airline Lufthansa and Belgiumâ„¢s Brussels Airlines.
