'Brotherhood failed Egyptians' trust'

Egyptians rally in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on June 30, 2013.

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt failed to keep the trust that they had been bestowed upon by the Egyptians through election.

Å“What happened in Egypt was actually a soft coup staged by the Egyptian army, which was unfortunately the result of repeated mistakes by [ousted Egyptisn president Mohamed] Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood, and was staged by the green light of the US and certain regional countries, including Saudi Arabia…,” Chairman of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Thursday.

He attributed the current political turmoil in Egypt to the lack of a true revolutionary change, stating that all revolutionary achievements in Egypt had been undone and this was why the North African country ended up where it is now.

Boroujerdi mentioned Morsiâ„¢s repeated mistakes, Muslim Brotherhood’s power grab, inattention to other political groups and prominent political figures who had a part in Egyptâ„¢s developments, giving more room to Salafi extremists, stoking public discontent, and ignoring the rights of religious minorities, especially Christians as the main factors which pitted people, parties and prominent figures against Morsi.

He expressed hope that the Muslim Brotherhood would adopt prudent political decisions, form a new political array and try its chances once more in Egyptâ„¢s future elections.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s army chief ousted Morsi and dissolved the country’s constitution in a move aimed at resolving the countryâ„¢s debilitating political crisis.

General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the new parliamentary elections will be held, and declared head of the Supreme Constitutional Court Adly Mansour as the caretaker leader.

The army announced the roadmap hours after its two-day ultimatum to Morsi came to an end.

Sisi said the army was fulfilling its “historic responsibility” to protect the country, and Morsi had “failed to meet the demands of the Egyptian people.”
