Brits rally in solidarity with Manning

Demonstrators gathered outside the US embassy in London on August 25, 2012.

Activists from across Britain are to stage a protest in support of Bradley Manning, the US soldier who leaked documents on the truth about the wars waged by the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan.

British campaigners are expected to take part in the demonstration, which is planned to be held outside the US embassy in London on Saturday June 1, in order to condemn the imprisonment of the US army private for blowing the whistle on war crimes.

Manning was arrested in Iraq in May 2010 on suspicion of having passed information to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is currently in political asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in the UK capital.

Manningâ„¢s trial is scheduled to start on June 3. He could face life imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charge of aiding the enemy.

On the closing day of Manningâ„¢s last pretrial hearing on Thursday May 23, a silent vigil was also held outside the US diplomatic mission in London to bring attention to his case.
