British peers plan gay marriage revolt

British Lords are planning to block the governmentâ„¢s proposed gay marriage bill.

Members of Britainâ„¢s House of Lords are preparing to block the coalition governmentâ„¢s proposed bill to legalize gay marriage in the UK, local media report.

Senior Tory peer Baroness Warsi has refused to lead the draft legislation through the House of Lords when asked to by British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Former head of the British army Lord Dannatt, ex-Conservative party chairman Lord Lothian, former Home Secretary Lord Waddington, former minister Lord Luce and Lord Singh of Wimbledon are amongst those set to criticize the bill in next Mondayâ„¢s session.

Some critics of same-sex marriage legislation regard it as a distraction from the UKâ„¢s current economic woes while others oppose the policy, saying it undermines the institution of marriage.

Å“Of those who said they would speak about [in the Lordsâ„¢ debate] half seem to be opposed. I really think the vote will be too close to call,” said Lord Dear, the retired chief constable of West Midlands Police and crossbench peer.

Earlier on May 21, the House of Commons voted to allow gay marriage in England and Wales despite fierce opposition from the majority of Conservative MPs.
