British Archbishop raps tax avoiders

Britainâ„¢s Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, has criticized “morally bankrupt” tax avoiders, who use legal loopholes to their own advantage in order to reduce the amount payable in tax.

The Archbishop told the Telegraph that more must be done worldwide in order to tackle tax evasion and help those living in poverty.

He also argued that publishing details of how much tax people pay would encourage other countries to become more transparent about how they spend public money.

Å“This lack of transparency means that companies in our global village can get away with tax-dodging or bribery,” he said.

“It leads to the extravagant prosperity of a small number of people while millions starve at their gates.”

Sentamu also spoke in support of the Enough Food For Everyone IF campaign group to help end global hunger.

Tens of thousands of people descended on Hyde Park, London, on Saturday for the Big IF London rally in an effort to make a massive call on G8 leaders to take action to tackle global hunger in their upcoming summit.

The rally, attended by 45,000 people, was timed to coincide with the Å“Nutrition for Growth” event in London ahead of the G8 summit of June 17 and 18 in Northern Ireland when Britain takes over the rotating presidency of the group of developed nations.
