An anti-government protest in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte, June 22, 2013
Brazilian police have clashed with the anti-government protesters in Rio de Janeiro who were calling for transparency in government spending and improvements in public services.
The clash took place outside the home of Rio de Janeiroâ„¢s governor on Friday, when thousands of protesters were confronted by police firing teargas at them.
The protesters responded by throwing rocks at the police and burning garbage cans, as the confrontations escalated and spread to the nearby neighborhood.
At least six protesters were arrested and several police officers injured during the clashes.
Brazil has been hit by nationwide protests since June 17, when street rallies began initially over a rise in bus fares.
However, the anger has now snowballed into nationwide demonstrations, with people demanding the government to address the issues of high taxes, inflation, corruption, and poor public services.
The protesters are also objecting to the spending of more than USD 26 billion of public money on the two major sporting events of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
