At least eight soldiers have been killed in a car bomb attack carried out in southern Yemen, local officials say.
Local sources said on Monday that a bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle to a military checkpoint in Yemen’s southern city of Radda in al-Bayda province, killing eight soldiers and wounding 10 others.
No group has claimed responsibility of the attack so far.
However, an official said that the attack in Radda was likely a retaliatory move by al-Qaeda affiliates after Yemeni forces stormed them in the area.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has taken advantage of the weakness of the Yemeni central government during about two years of anti-government demonstrations to expand their presence in the impoverished country.
Al-Qaeda loyalists have carried out a spate of deadly attacks against Yemeni security forces since Ali Abdullah Saleh’s successor, President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi, came to power in February 2012.
