Bomb kills 2 security forces in Pakistan

A Pakistani policeman receives treatment at a hospital after being injured in a roadside bomb attack in Peshawar on June 6, 2013.

At least two security forces have been killed and three others injured in a roadside bomb attack in Pakistan.

Å“It was an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, two policemen have been killed and three injured. Condition of one of them is critical,” senior police official Shafiullah Khan said in a statement issued on Thursday.

The security forces were on patrol in the Daudzai suburb of Peshawar when the explosion took place, the statement added.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack so far, but pro-Taliban militant groups are often blamed for bomb attacks in Pakistan.

On May 24, at least nine police officers were killed in two separate attacks carried out by militants in Peshawar.

The fresh attacks underline the challenge of militant violence faced by newly sworn-in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The Pakistani Army has launched several operations in the troubled northwest in a bid to flush out militants from the tribal zone.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since the US-led war in Afghanistan began in October 2001.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan.
