At least two people have been killed and several others injured after a powerful bomb explosion rocked the southwestern Pakistani town of Chaman.
According to local security officials, the explosion took place on Wednesday near the cityâ„¢s railway station close to the Afghan border, the daily Dawn reported.
Sources say at least ten people were wounded in the deadly attack. The injured were transferred to a nearby hospital for necessary medical treatment.
Security forces cordoned off the area after the blast, and launched an investigation.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, but pro-Taliban militants have been blamed for similar attacks in the past.
Railway traffic in the area stood suspended whereas the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at Chaman was also sealed off following the fatal blast.
Town of Chaman borders Spin Boldak District in the southern Kandahar Province of Afghanistan and has seen several violent attacks over the past couple of years.
Pro-Taliban militants and some Baloch insurgent groups have carried out numerous attacks against security forces as well as civilians and managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country, despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani army.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism.
Thousands others have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan.
