Blast kills 17 in northwest Pakistan

A bomb has gone off on a bus carrying government employees in northwestern Pakistan, killing 17 people and injuring nearly 50 others, Press TV reports.

The incident took place on Friday in Peshawar, which is the main city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

œThe bomb was planted inside the bus. At the moment, the death of 17 people have been confirmed while 47 were wounded,” said Zahirul Islam, deputy commissioner of Peshawar.

The passenger bus was taking government staff home to the town of Charsadda after work.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

On September 22, more than 80 people were killed in a twin bombing outside a church in Peshawar.

On September 19, unknown militants attacked a mosque on the outskirts of Peshawar, killing three preachers and wounding nearly 20 others.

Thousands of people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks in Pakistan since 2001, when Islamabad entered an alliance with Washington on the so-called war on terror.

Thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
