United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on the UN Security Council to take action against the unrest in Syria.

“The political environment within Syria and across the region remains polarized. The Security Council remains paralyzed,” Ban told the council on Wednesday.

“It is essential for the Security Council to overcome the deadlock and find the unity that will make meaningful action possible,” Ban stated.

He also said the international community must make efforts to bring about a political solution, adding, “It’s long past time we resolved this conflict.”

Earlier in the day, senior political analyst Webster Griffin Tarpley told Press TV that NATO established death squads in Syria in line with its plots aimed at removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“These death squads have been created with the help of NATO and with the help of the [Persian] Gulf monarchies inside Syria,” he said.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
