Americans ‘will not stand NSA hacking’

An American analyst says the American people will not tolerate the alleged hacking and intercepting of their computer systems by the National Security Agency.

Å“No American patriot is going to stand for this, for having the NSA intercept for example computer equipment during shipment to their homes so that it can be taken to some secret workshop and have bugging equipment placed in it,” Bill Still told Press TV on Monday.

A report by German magazine Der Spiegel has revealed that NSAâ„¢s elite hacking units, in collaboration with the CIA and FBI, routinely and secretly intercept computer hardware in transit, and take it to a secret workshop where it could be discretely fitted with espionage software before being sent on its way.

Intercepting computer equipment in such a way lets the agency gain remote access to the systems once they are delivered and installed, the report said, citing internal NSA documents.

The report also indicates that the NSA can even exploit error reports from Microsoft’s Windows operating system; by intercepting the error reports and determining what’s wrong with a target’s computer, the NSA can then attack it with Trojans or other malware.

Å“If it can be proven that theyâ„¢ve been doing this within the United States, this means Congress will absolutely move to significantly cut NSA funding, thatâ„¢s the chokehold we still have on them,” Still said.

Å“This has gotten completely out of hand and it must be stopped,” he added.

The NSAâ„¢s spying programs, uncovered earlier this year by whistleblower Edward Snowden, has raised widespread concern about the reach of the agency’s operations and its ability to spy into the affairs of private individuals in the United States and abroad as well as the communications of foreign leaders.
