The 2012 shooting rampage killed 26 students and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Thousands of demonstrators across the United States on Saturday marked the first anniversary of the shooting rampage that killed 26 students and teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Fairfax News reported that many demonstrators spent a cold Saturday outside the headquarters of the National Rifle Association on Waples Mill Road in Fairfax to protest against the organization™s pro-gun policy.
Protesters blame the NRA for blocking even the most modest measures to stop the unfettered distribution of assault rifles and other weapons with large magazines capable of firing hundreds of shots continuously, the report said.
Schools bells tolled 26 times in Newtown as the town marked the anniversary.
In Washington, President Barack Obama and first lady lit 26 votive candles in the White House Map Room.
In his weekly radio address, Obama said the US government hasn™t done enough to make its communities safer by keeping dangerous people from getting guns and healing troubled minds.
œWe have to do more to keep dangerous people from getting their hands on a gun so easily. We have to do more to heal troubled minds. We have to do everything we can to protect our children from harm and make them feel loved, and valued, and cared for,” he said.
Anti-gun activists say Congress had done nothing since last year to control rising gun violence in the country. They blame the NRA™s lobbyists for congressional inaction on gun control.
Since the deadly shooting in Newtown, nearly 33,500 people have been killed in gun violence across the US, according to slate.com.
