American people 'sick' of another war

As the United States gears up for an assault on Syria, experts warn that Americans are deeply opposed and weary of another war by the US government.

Å“As far as the American people go, 80 percent of the American people are opposed to any military involvement any place in the world right now,” said Mike Harris, the editor at Veterans Today.

Å“The American people are sick of war,” Harris told Press TV on Monday.

Å“There are elements within the [US] government who support Israel, who wish to promote this war,” he said.

Harris also criticized the Obama administration for supporting the foreign backed al-Qaeda rebels fighting the Syrian government.

Å“The rebels are supported by Saudi Arabia, theyâ„¢re supported by Turkey, theyâ„¢re supported by Israel, the USA and France. This is not a homegrown or indigenous rebel force,” he said.

Protesters from around the world, including from the US, have taken to the streets to protest against a possible US-led attack on Syria.

Defense experts warn that a military action will cost American taxpayers billions of dollars at an era of austerity and contracting budgets.

Washington has accused the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of carrying out a chemical weapons attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21. The Syrian government has rejected the allegation.

On Saturday, President Barack Obama, who had previously said a chemical attack was a Å“red line,” announced that he had decided Washington should launch military strikes against Syria.

The president, however, said that he would seek congressional approval for an attack.
