Iranâ„¢s Central Supervisory Board of Elections says it has approved up to 95 percent of the hopefuls who signed up for the upcoming city and rural council elections.
The body said on Sunday that only 1 percent of those disapproved have submitted complaints to the board for further review.
Around 300,000 hopefuls have signed up for the race, according to the board.
The body further added that a final list of approved hopefuls would be released nationwide on May 25. They will be permitted to begin campaigning after that date.
The 4th city and rural council elections are scheduled to be held on June 14, concurrent with Iranâ„¢s 11th presidential poll.
The candidates have been vetted by Iranâ„¢s Guardian Council before final approval.
The city and village Islamic councils are local establishments that are elected by public vote in all cities and villages across the country. Council members in each city or village are elected for a four-year term.
The councils are tasked with helping the Islamic Republicâ„¢s social, economic, cultural and educational advancement by encouraging public cooperation.
