Two Afghan policemen have been killed and eight others injured in a suicide attack targeting a police headquarters in east Afghanistan.
The attack took place on Saturday, when the suicide bomber hit an explosives-laden car into the police department in Jalalabad, the capital of in Nangarhar Province.
œThe bomber drove the car into the gates of the police headquarters in Jalalabad city,” Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial governor said.
œWe have two policemen martyred, eight others including a traffic officer were wounded in the attack and they have been taken to the hospital. The bomber is dead,” the Afghan official said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban militants often carry out such attacks.
Jalalabad is a regular target of attacks by the militants in Afghanistan. The city has seen a series of attacks during the past year.
Earlier in August, suicide bombers targeted the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, killing at least 12 people.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of the so-called war on terror. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but after nearly 12 years, the foreign troops have still not been able to establish security in the country.
Foreign forces are scheduled to withdraw from Afghanistan and hand over security to the Afghan government forces by the end of 2014.
The US, however, intends to keep some forces in Afghanistan for œtraining and counter-terrorism operations.”
