A 14-year-old girl riding her bicycle in Compton, Calif. was shot to death Saturday night. The victim, identified as Alicia Cassandra Gomez, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Authorities said that the shooting could be gang-related, and friends of Gomez told CBS2 Los Angeles that she had been involved in some gang activities.
The victim’s mother, Alicia Gomez, was unaware of any gang ties her daughter may have had, and told CBS2 that she had spent time with her daughter at the park earlier that day.
Jonathan, a man who identified himself as Gomez’s cousin, spoke to KTLA about how gang violence may have played a part in her death.
“Just hanging out with the wrong crowd, as always,” said Jonathan to KTLA. “They see you with a bad crowd, they see you by yourself. In order to hurt that crowd, they hurt you.”
Gomez’s death is a harsh reminder that Compton has a long way to go when it comes to re-branding itself as the “new Brooklyn.”
For instance, one mourner captured by CBS2’s cameras questioned whether or not it was safe to ride bicycles in Compton without getting shot.
Jonathan also took a stand against violence in Compton and violence in general.
