Rallies to protest Gaza bombing

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Tens of thousands of protesters are due to voice their anger at the Gaza bombing blitz in a series of rallies across the UK.

Up to 20,000 people - including the singer Annie Lennox and Respect MP George Galloway - are expected to march along the Embankment in London before walking to Trafalgar Square to call for an immediate end to the Israeli attacks.

The demonstration is the biggest of at least 18 organised across the country.

Former model Bianca Jagger and singer Lennox have backed the protests, calling on American President-elect Barack Obama to speak up against the bombardment.

Other rallies will take place at Blytheswood Square, Glasgow; Bedford Square, Exeter; Princes Street, Edinburgh; Bristol city centre; Bold Street, Liverpool; Norwich Forum; Portsmouth’s Guildhall Square; Queen Victoria Square, Hull; Tunbridge Wells town centre; Leeds Art Gallery; All Saints Park, Manchester; Grey’s Monument, Newcastle; Castle Square, Swansea; St Sampson’s Square, York; Morrisons, Caernarfon; Bradford city centre; and Sheffield town hall.

Former mayor of London Ken Livingstone and comedian Alexei Sayle also added their support to the campaign to end the violence.

Speaking at a press conference in central London, Ms Jagger said: “I would like to make an appeal to President-elect Obama to speak up.

“People throughout the world were hopeful when he was elected and we must appeal to him to ask for the immediate cessation of the bombardment of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.”

Lennox spoke of her shock at watching scenes of the bombing on television. She said: “A few days after Christmas I came downstairs, put the television on, and saw smoke pyres coming from buildings and I was shocked to the core because I was thinking as a mother and as a human being.”

Comedian Sayle said he was speaking out because it was important for Jewish voices to be heard. He said: “I want to feel proud of Israel, I want to be proud of my people but I am ashamed.”

Hamas deserve all they get…. they are not thinking of their women and children, when they persistantly fire rockets at Israel!! Full well knowing that Israel will not ignore such unecessary actions. Nobody likes killing on this scale.
Is anybody really interested what individuals like Annie Lennox, Ken Livingston and George Galloway think…..’no nos’ like them just have to keep in the public eye.
The six day war, when Israel suprised the world, in defeating yet an other ARAB mistake, when they gave the militants (probably bl***y) islamics, truely a bloody nose, don’t they ever learn…NO they don’t . I feel no sympathy for Arabs and Islamics, they deserve all they get, with their aggresive attitude towards the free world!

Peter FRO you ill informed moron. The rocket fire from Hamas has killed 20 people in 8 years, Israel have killed 400 (including 100 civilians) in 8 days, have you ever heard of the term proportionality?

If you think this carnage by the abomonation that calls itself Israel has anything to do with rocket fire then you are duller than you appear! There is an election in IsraHELL in a month and the more Palestinian blood you have on your hands the more votes you get! Hence Livni, Omert, Barack et al all jumping up and down, frothing at the mouth and falling over each other to our hawk each other, they are war pigs!

They have forced more that 1.5 million people in to an area the size of the Isle of Wight, they don’t allow them food, electricity, fuel, medical aid, the right to earn a living, safety for their children, freedom of movement or the right to self determination. If someone treated me like that, or more importantly my family I would be looking for ways to strike back (even something as ineffective as the homemade rockets that YOU think this is all about).

Go for it Israel? Nice sentiments, but when I see artillery fire landing in urban areas or read about whole families being wiped out I can’t but think that it could be my kids that were there and I would hope someone would try and help me. You would be better served visiting somewhere like massada2000 than rinf imo, I don’t think you’ll find to many people here who think that blowing up civilians for votes is a good thing.

You make me sick to my stomach mate, I am appalled by the actions of a country that believes it consists of ‘Gods chosen people’ and spouts on about ‘purity of arms’ and you are cheerleading them in this slaughter.

Gaza has no army, navy, air force, no bunkers or air raid shelters, no means of defence or protection. It is the most populated piece of land in the world and Israel are chucking bombs in to it and telling us how they have no choice. They are barberous, murderous pigs and what goes around comes around. somewhere between 25,000 and 75-000 people protested on the streets of London today, more around the world.

If Israel think that they can stop Hamas shooting rockets at them (as if that is their intention) with this tactic they are sorely mistaken. What they are doing is providing more reasons for Palestinians to become militant. If they really want to stop the rocket fire they should return to their pre-1967 borders (as per UN resolution 242), lift the siege of Gaza, let Palestine have a state of their own, make reperations for the land they have stolen from Palestinian families, allow Palestine to have self determination and basically stop acting like a fucking bully.

If you want to see some evidence of the way they behave in war (hence the blanket ban on reporting in and around Gaza now) have a google for Sabra Shatila and Qana. I bet you believe Dubya when he tells you who the terrorists are too huh? Scratch the surface and look a bit deeper.

Peter - you are an individual who has obviously suffered from a brutal loveless upbringing. You have the same mentality as the Israeli survivors of the holocaust, and the Palestinian children who they are ensuring will share their fate in the future, when eaten up by outrage and injustice may become suicide bombers. Can’t you see that to wish this suffering on anyone is wrong. The Israelis are a nation traumatised by the Holocaust. They have internally vowed never to let anyone hurt or crush them again. In their anger and outrage they have become hardened and cruel. The abused have become the abusers. They are perpetuating violence on innocent people that haven’t done anything but be born Palestinian. If you cant feel for them, it is because you have lost any feeling for yourself.

    Hello

You guys are a bunch of Hypocrites, since when a nation doenst have the right to defend themselves, regardless of the proportionality (which was no there when all Arab countries attacked them during the 6 days war)? Remember that Hamas broke the truce…. ?

Why are we demonizing Israel in the Media, why are we making peace protest around the world for 600 dead terrorists, when there are still 2 MAJOR wars being fouhgt in afghanistan and IRak, where 1 Million + civilians are allready dead… Why arent we having protests for all the people dying in the wars in aftica which takes arounf 4000 people PER DAY!!! Why aren’t we crying for the dead in Georgia?

Americans and Brits are protesting for peace for GAza, when both their countries are at War… What a joke…

Why arent mulsim countries helping ppl form Gaza, why does help has to come from Western Countries? I mean Arab countries have oil, ressources, and could be sending them lots of help, still arent.

The media and the world are just a bunch of hypocrites, who try to Demonize Israel for their legit right to defend themselves.

You guys are just being tossed around and manipulated by the Media… Anyway, basically what happens in Israel and Gaza is God’s business and anything we think, feel, or believe as no influence watsoever…. Don’t beleive me, why is Jerusalem a Cup of Trembling for the whole world… Read Here: http://commendatori.wordpress.com/2009/01/01/israel-why-the-center-of-media-attention-israel-a-cup-of-trembling/

    God Bless all

Holly & Ashley - I am not as you describe!! Far from it, but l can see common sense…..if the French were hurling rockets across the channel - i.e. 6000 rockets in 8 years….would we as a nation put up with that?? (Maybe the way we think these days!!) This so called government of the Palestians….HAMAS …..is surely an anagram, and really should be called …. A S H A M!!
Do they think of the people they are supposed to be serving, when they hide and store rockets in their damn mosques and schools NO they don’t! A SHAM
are hellbent on destroying Israel, at any cost, even using the very people they are supposed to care for, as a human shield, COME ON GET REAL.

STOP PRESS - News interviews SKY NEWS Sunday 17th Jan 2009 - Quote from A SHAM spokesman : That even if Israel put a ceasefire in place, they will just continue sending rockets, they deserve all they get……but, l do feel for the kids caught up in this conflict, these terrorists obviously don’t.

For a start it was not the democratically elected government of GAZA who broke the ceasefire but Israel when they bombed the home and blew up an Hamas leader including his entire family.

For months Israel has been blocading GAZA preventing essentials entering, of which in itself is an act of aggression and WAR.

Hamas should not be firing rockets into Civilian areas as that is a war crime, but so is the blockade of GAZA.

Israel has already lost the Propaganda war and should surrender peacefully, give up its bullying of GAZA and start to fulfil its international obligations and do what the UN has instructed.

Israel is a disgrace to the middle east and in fact the world and should bow its head with shame.
