Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi hold his portrait at a rally at Raba Al Adaawyia Mosque in Cairo on July 4, 2013.
An independent Italian newspaper has published a secret document showing that Saudi Arabia was opposed to Mohamed Morsi being elected Egyptâ„¢s president over a year ago.
The Notizie Geopolitiche said that the document was a letter written by Foreign Minister Saud bin Faisal to the Saudi Embassy in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
It was written when Egypt held its first freely-contested elections in May last year.
In the letter, Riyadh ordered its diplomats in Cairo to do everything possible to prevent the victory of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood Movement, to which Morsi belongs.
Morsi took office as Egyptâ„¢s first freely-elected president in June 2012. However, after facing calls to step down, he was toppled in a military coup July 3 this year.
Saudi Arabia has supported Egyptâ„¢s army intervention in the countryâ„¢s political crisis. It was also the first country to congratulate Egyptâ„¢s interim president.
The military’s overthrow of Morsi has sparked deadly clashes and deepened divisions in the North African country.
