British campaigners are to stage a protest in London to express solidarity with victims of a disastrous factory building collapse in Bangladesh.
The demonstration called Å“Solidarity with Bangladeshi workers! No more factory deaths!” is planned to be held on Monday May 19 outside Gap clothes shop in Islington, north London.
The protesters will be leafleting and petitioning outside the shop to call for US retailer Gap Inc to sign the Bangladesh Fire and Building Safety Agreement, which is designed to improve safety conditions in the Asian countryâ„¢s garment factories.
On April 24, the eight-story building of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Savar, an industrial suburb of Dhaka, collapsed. Over 3,000 people, mainly young women workers, were in the building at the time of the incident.
More than 1,100 people were killed in the collapse, which is regarded as one of the worst industrial disasters in the world.
Earlier in April, British activists gathered outside flagship store of high street giant Primark in London, demanding compensation for victims of the clothing factory collapse in Bangladesh.
